We keep these notes short and practical. Each one takes a single question, gives the honest answer, and points out when the job is one for a technician rather than a Saturday afternoon.

The questions that come up

Repair & Maintenance
What happens if the report lists a stop-use item?
The door is parked in a safe position, usually closed, with the opener disconnected so nobody runs it by habit, and the reason is shown to you. The correction is explained and quoted as its own piece of work, and once it is done the door is retested through the balance, reversal and photo-eye checks before it goes back into daily service. Another door into the house or garage is used in the meantime. Garage Door Safety Inspection
How do I test the safety reversal at home?
Two tests, once a month. With the door open, press close and wave a broom handle through the photo-eye beam near the floor: the door should stop and go back up. Next, set a 2x4 flat on the concrete in the middle of the opening and press close: the door must reverse when it meets the board. If it stops on the board without reversing, the down travel or force setting needs adjustment, and if it fails after that, book a visit. Garage Door Tune-Up
My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?
Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How do you work out which make and model my door is?
The manufacturer's label is the starting point. It is often a sticker on the end of a section, on the inside of the top section or on the vertical track, and it usually gives the model or series, a date and sometimes a colour code. Failing that, the panel design, section heights, thickness, joint profile and hinge spacing narrow it down, and the distributor can usually confirm the model from photographs and measurements. Springs & Hardware
What is checked after the rollers go in?
The door is run through several cycles with the technician watching each wheel stay seated, then balanced by hand with the opener released to confirm it holds at halfway. The top section is checked for a tight seal at the header, the hinge and bracket fasteners are snugged, and the opener's force and reversal are tested with a 1-1/2 inch block in the door's path. The industry checklist for a residential door covers exactly these points, and they are all part of finishing the job. Garage Door Roller Replacement
What happens during a hinge replacement visit?
The opener is disconnected and the door left closed. The technician inspects every hinge, roller and screw hole and explains what was found. Worn hinges are then changed one at a time with parts of the same number and gauge, tired holes are re-anchored, and rollers are renewed where needed. The door is run by hand to check the panels fold cleanly and the fit against the jambs, balance is tested, and the opener is reconnected and its safety reversal tested. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What is the track made of, and what sizes are there?
It is galvanized steel folded into a channel that the roller wheels ride in. Residential doors almost always use two-inch track, with three-inch reserved for heavier or wider doors. The curved piece comes in a radius, commonly 12 or 15 inches, that sets how much headroom the door uses. Replacement pieces are ordered to the same profile, gauge and radius as the rest of the set. Should I lubricate the cables?
A light film, yes. A mist of silicone or a lubricant made for garage doors on the cables, especially the lowest stretch near the brackets, sheds moisture and slows rust. Avoid heavy grease or oil, which holds grit and salt against the strands. The springs, hinges, roller bearings and bracket pins take the same product a couple of times a year, and the tracks are simply wiped clean. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
The motor hums but the door stays put. What is usually wrong?
A hum with no movement means the motor is receiving power but something is stopping it turning, or stopping its turn from reaching the door. On AC units a failed start capacitor is the common cause; on chain-drive heads a stripped nylon drive gear is the other. Less often the trolley has simply been released from the carriage. Each of these is a routine repair once identified, and the hum is one of the more helpful sounds an opener makes. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Should I oil the chain?
Follow the opener's manual, and lean toward less. Many makers ask for the chain to be left dry or given only a very light treatment, because a heavily oiled chain collects grit that grinds the sprocket and drips onto the car. The grease that matters is white lithium on the rail where the trolley runs, renewed every two or three years, and on the gears inside the head, which the technician packs during a repair. Penetrating sprays are kept away from the whole drive. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
How often should belt tension be checked?
A look every few months is enough: with the door closed and again with it open, the belt should run level with no sag below the rail. A yearly service that checks tension against the spring length, looks at the sprocket and pulley and runs the balance and reversal tests keeps a belt drive quiet for its whole life. Check again after the first hard cold of the winter. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will the new opener cope with an unheated garage in winter?
Yes, when it is chosen for it. Manufacturers publish an operating temperature range for each model, and the technician matches that to a detached or unheated garage. The force setting is tuned so the door moves in the cold without the operator being oversensitive, the hardware gets a cold-rated lubricant, and a backup battery is kept charged by the unit. Clearing ice from the threshold remains the one winter chore. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can damaged framing be corrected during replacement?
Minor preparation may be included when it is clearly described, but deteriorated jambs, an unsound header or structural changes can require a separate trade and project decision. The assessment identifies fastening conditions before the door is ordered. That lets required carpentry or masonry work finish before new track and counterbalance brackets need secure attachment. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
How is the opening measured before ordering?
The installer records finished width and height at multiple points, then checks the floor, jambs and header for level, plumb and useful attachment surfaces. Sideroom, headroom and backroom are measured to nearby obstructions. Beams, pipes, lights, storage racks and opener equipment are included because the door sections and tracks need a clear path from closed to fully open. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Is a building permit needed for replacement?
A like-for-like door change and a project involving structural alteration are different situations. Enlarging an opening, combining bays, replacing framing, or completing work already covered by a permit can introduce municipal review. Ask the local building department about the specific scope, and keep its direction with the door selection and installation documents. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What information should I keep after the project?
Retain the door and opener instructions, product identifiers, colour or finish reference, glass selection, spring information and the final work record. Photographs of labels and the completed decorative layout can also help. This small file supports correct cleaning choices, makes later parts discussions more precise and gives future service technicians a clear account of the system originally installed.
